Patch Cards (改造カード Modification Card), also known as Mod Cards, is a feature using the Card e-Reader+ on the GBA and an extra built-in feature on the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection. Both versions of Mega Man Battle Network 5 can scan in cards to further customize their MegaMan, as well as other features.
*In the Wii U Virtual Console version of Mega Man Battle Network 5, the BassCross MegaMan Patch Card is obtainable in all regions of the game by opening the Comm. menu in the PET screen.
===Information=== | |||
Patch Cards for Battle Network 5 come in 3 categories: Patch Cards, Item Cards, and Rare Chip Distribution Cards.
Patch and Item Cards were released in two parts via booster packs. Promotion and Rare Chip Distribution cards were given with specific EXE merchandise such as the Progress Chip Gate, and special events in Japan.
=== | ====Changes from Battle Network 4====
*The entire system has been rehauled from an Address system into system using a numerical capacity limit.
*Having Patch Cards on no longer prevent from registering SP Navi deletion times in Records.
*There are now Patch Cards that gives free items. These are items that can be obtained in-game albeit some can be quite rare.
===Patch Cards=== | |||
Patch Cards can be used to enhance your MegaMan with Abilities not possible normally. Unlike how Patch Cards worked in the EXE4, with slots for cards, EXE5 Introduced an MB system.
Each card now has a certain MB value, with MegaMan having a storage limit of 80 MB. Cards with higher MB generally have better Abilities. Individual cards can be turned on or off when needed, but this does not lower their MB use. This means that previous cards must be deleted when scanning new Patch Cards. All Patch Card effects take place after NaviCust changes.
*The order of the Patch Cards equipped are important. The lowest placed card that is equipped will overwrite any conflicting effects from upper placed cards.
====Patch Card Menu====
Entering a Patch Card will unlock a 4th screen in the MegaMan menu that will show a detailed status. This screen will remain even if all Patch Cards are deleted. All of MegaMan’s accumulated stats, current active abilities, and current bugs will be shown here.
====Bass XX==== | ====Bass XX====
If any | | ||
If any Patch Cards are active, a stronger version of Bass, BassXX (read as Bass Double X), can be encountered in Nebula Area 6 instead of BassΩ. This encounter can be LocEnemy, then players can fight BassXX using non-Patched MegaMan in later encounters.
====BugStop==== | ====BugStop====
In the Japanese version: If BugStop is installed in the NaviCust, all bugs | In the Japanese version & Legacy Collection: If BugStop is installed in the NaviCust, all bugs including Patch Card bugs are fixed. Disadvantageous effects such as Minus HP will still occur.
In the English version: If BugStop is installed in the NaviCust, only bugs in the NaviCust are fixed | In the English GBA version: If BugStop is installed in the NaviCust, only bugs in the NaviCust are fixed. This is the same as Patch Cards in Battle Network 6.

BassCross MegaMan is a unique card that works not only in MMBN5, but also in MMBN6. Its effect varies between versions. Unlike other Patch Cards, they give MegaMan a special visual change. Team Protoman has a gold BassCross (power-type), while Team Colonel has a silver BassCross (speed-type).

- In the Wii U Virtual Console version of Mega Man Battle Network 5, the BassCross MegaMan Patch Card is obtainable in all regions of the game by opening the Comm. menu in the PET screen.
Information
Patch Cards for Battle Network 5 come in 3 categories: Patch Cards, Item Cards, and Rare Chip Distribution Cards.
Patch and Item Cards were released in two parts via booster packs. Promotion and Rare Chip Distribution cards were given with specific EXE merchandise such as the Progress Chip Gate, and special events in Japan.
Changes from Battle Network 4
- The entire system has been rehauled from an Address system into system using a numerical capacity limit.
- Having Patch Cards on no longer prevent from registering SP Navi deletion times in Records.
- There are now Patch Cards that gives free items. These are items that can be obtained in-game albeit some can be quite rare.
Patch Cards
Patch Cards can be used to enhance your MegaMan with Abilities not possible normally. Unlike how Patch Cards worked in the EXE4, with slots for cards, EXE5 Introduced an MB system.
Each card now has a certain MB value, with MegaMan having a storage limit of 80 MB. Cards with higher MB generally have better Abilities. Individual cards can be turned on or off when needed, but this does not lower their MB use. This means that previous cards must be deleted when scanning new Patch Cards. All Patch Card effects take place after NaviCust changes.
- The order of the Patch Cards equipped are important. The lowest placed card that is equipped will overwrite any conflicting effects from upper placed cards.
Patch Card Menu
Entering a Patch Card will unlock a 4th screen in the MegaMan menu that will show a detailed status. This screen will remain even if all Patch Cards are deleted. All of MegaMan’s accumulated stats, current active abilities, and current bugs will be shown here.
Bass XX
If any Patch Cards are active, a stronger version of Bass, BassXX (read as Bass Double X), can be encountered in Nebula Area 6 instead of BassΩ. This encounter can be LocEnemy, then players can fight BassXX using non-Patched MegaMan in later encounters.
BugStop
In the Japanese version & Legacy Collection: If BugStop is installed in the NaviCust, all bugs including Patch Card bugs are fixed. Disadvantageous effects such as Minus HP will still occur.
In the English GBA version: If BugStop is installed in the NaviCust, only bugs in the NaviCust are fixed. This is the same as Patch Cards in Battle Network 6.
Types of Effects

BassCross MegaMan
BassCross MegaMan is a unique card that works not only in MMBN5, but also in MMBN6. Its effect varies between versions. Unlike other Patch Cards, they give MegaMan a special visual change. Team Protoman has a gold BassCross (power-type), while Team Colonel has a silver BassCross (speed-type).

Trivia
- This feature was locked out of the English GBA versions but the data of the cards have been left untouched.
- Since Mega Man Battle Network 1 do not list enemy names, these cards are the first instance of some MMBN1 viruses to have names in-game. While they were written in the Japanese guidebooks, this is the first instance of them ever having official English names.
- For some reason in the English game's data, some previously named viruses are renamed:
- Spooky > Ghost
- CanDevil > Candela
- If BassCross MegaMan is active in Network Duels, instead of usual MegaMan enemy tag, the opponent will have BassCross MegaMan appear as BCMegaMn.
- In the data, the name ModMegaM (かいぞうロックマン Modified Rockman) also exists but is unused. Patched MegaMan (改造ロックマン Modified Rockman) is used in official material when referring to MegaMan with Patch Cards.
- Due to BugStop ceasing battle bugs in the Japanese version, its usage was banned in official Japanese tournaments that utilized Patch Cards. Director Masahiro Yasuma states it was done to maximize enjoyment of Patch Card pros and cons, as well as the importance of the order they are put in[1].
